Buying refurbished without buying risk

Enterprise hardware is built for duty cycles most buyers never reach. A drive rated for 550TB written per year and 2.5 million hours MTBF has plenty of service life left when it comes out of a three-year lease — which is why a certified refurbished unit costs 40–60% less than new and still carries a warranty.

What matters is the testing. Every unit that passes through our lab gets a full SMART capture, a surface scan, and a sustained read/write burn-in before it is graded. Anything with reallocated sectors, pending sectors, or a power-on-hours count outside our threshold does not get listed. You see the SMART report with the unit.

Data security is handled before grading: all media is wiped to NIST 800-88 Purge and a certificate of erasure is issued for every unit. Firmware is updated to the current stable release for the model and the unit ships in an anti-static clamshell with foam, not a padded envelope.

Renewed units are tested, wiped, and functionally verified — they may show rack wear or handling marks. Certified refurbished units pass the same tests plus an extended burn-in and cosmetic inspection, and ship with a longer warranty. Both are covered for a minimum of one year.
We list the SMART power-on-hours range on every product page and reject anything over 25,000 hours for certified refurbished stock. The actual value for the drive you receive is on the report in the box.
