What's in the box.

The paper pile, gone by lunch.
Load up to 100 pages, press Scan/Enter, and the fi-8170 scans both sides of each at 70 pages a minute, in color, grayscale or black and white, at 200 or 300 dpi. Connect it by USB or put it on the network, and its TWAIN and ISIS drivers bring it into the document software you already run.

Mixed sizes, cards, passports, long pages.
The feeder takes anything from a 1.9 × 2 inch slip to a legal page in the same stack, from 5.3 lb tissue-weight paper to 124 lb card. Plastic cards up to 1.4 mm go through (embossed cards one at a time), and in Manual Feed Mode passports and booklets up to 7 mm thick feed without a carrier sheet. Long-page mode handles documents up to 240 inches.
An ultrasonic sensor and length detection stop the scan when two sheets feed together, and iSOP listens and watches for a page about to crumple. A manual feed mode handles items one at a time.

How much paper do you have?
Here's how long it takes.
Ricoh rates the fi-8170 at 70 pages a minute single-sided and 140 images a minute double-sided, at 200 or 300 dpi, in color, grayscale or black and white. Pick a day’s volume.
Rated speeds are for A4 portrait at 200 or 300 dpi; actual speed depends on the computer and software. Reloading the 100-sheet feeder adds time the arithmetic doesn’t include. 10,000 sheets is Ricoh’s expected daily volume.
Scans that need less fixing afterward.
PaperStream IP cleans every image as it comes off the sensors, and PaperStream Capture files the batch where it belongs.

Questions we get asked.
Does it work on Windows 11?
Yes. Ricoh lists Windows 11 and 10 and Windows Server 2016 to 2025. On Arm-based Windows 11 PCs only the 32-bit PaperStream IP (TWAIN) driver is supported; Arm-based Windows 10 and the ISIS driver are not.
Does it work with a Mac?
Ricoh publishes an Image Scanner Driver for macOS (ICA) and one for Linux (SANE). The full PaperStream IP cleanup features are on Windows.
Can I share it over the network?
Yes. It has a Gigabit Ethernet port alongside USB 3.2, and Ricoh’s Operator’s Guide states that scanning speed is the same over USB or wired LAN. PaperStream NX Manager lets users scan from the scanner’s own panel with no PC; it needs a Windows CAL per scanner or user.
When do the rollers need replacing?
Ricoh’s Operator’s Guide gives every 200,000 sheets for the brake roller (PA03810-0001) and the pick roller. Units with part number PA03810-B055 use pick roller PA03670-0022; the part number is on the label on the back.
Can it scan passports and ID cards?
Yes. In Manual Feed Mode, passports and booklets up to 7 mm thick feed without the Booklet Carrier Sheet. Plastic cards up to 1.4 mm feed too: up to 10 unembossed cards of 0.76 mm or less, or 5 up to 1.4 mm, at a time, and embossed cards one at a time.
What condition will mine arrive in?
This listing is new: it ships factory sealed in the manufacturer's original packaging, with the one-year AnyHDD warranty from the date of delivery.
What warranty is included?
It carries a one-year AnyHDD warranty from the date of delivery. Where applicable, it may also be eligible for the original manufacturer's warranty.
What is your return policy?
30 days for a full refund if it is not the right fit. Return shipping is covered on anything that arrives not as described.
