Workstation power, one cable.

The 280W G4 runs from a 280 W adapter. Its combo cable carries USB-C and a 4.5 mm power barrel: HP platforms that take the barrel get up to 230 W; over USB-C alone it delivers up to 100 W, and up to 75 W to non-HP laptops.

The front USB-C port gives 15 W, and the two side USB-A ports charge at 7.5 W each.

Figures are HP's published external-monitor support for the Thunderbolt G4 Dock by host DisplayPort version; actual output depends on the laptop. The lower DisplayPort and the USB-C DisplayPort on the back share a stream: only one of them can be used at a time.

Twelve ports. One cable.

Video, network and Thunderbolt 4 on the back; a USB-A charging port on each side; a 15 W USB-C port up front.

Wired where it counts.

Two network controllers inside give the G4 1 Gb and 2.5 Gb Ethernet on one RJ45 port, and on HP laptops the dock keeps the network identity and wake features IT relies on.

  • 2.5 Gb EthernetOn infrastructure that supports it; 1 Gb otherwise.
  • Wake on LANFrom off, sleep or hibernation on HP and HP-supported notebooks; some laptops only wake from sleep.
  • MAC address pass-throughThe laptop keeps its own network identity through the dock, on HP and HP-supported notebooks.
  • Wired Intel vProAuthorized admins can reach vPro notebooks over the wired connection, even when they are off.

Built for the whole floor.

The G4 is HP's commercial Thunderbolt 4 dock, with the manageability and security HP lists for it.

HP Sure Start

Dock firmware integrity verification and recovery, so the dock can't become an attack path.

Disconnected firmware updates

IT can schedule dock firmware updates that install even after the user disconnects, through a one-click installer.

eTag

Track docks by product name, serial number and MAC address with HP's electronic asset tag.

PXE boot

Image a laptop over the wire through the dock.

Works with what you already own.

Thunderbolt 3 or 4 laptops, and USB-C laptops with DisplayPort Alt Mode at alt-mode speeds. HP laptops that take the 4.5 mm barrel get up to 230 W, plus the HP-only features.

What the laptop needs

A Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port, or a USB-C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode and Power Delivery. The 230 W path needs an HP platform with the 4.5 mm barrel input. Thunderbolt laptops need Thunderbolt software 17.x or later.

What only HP laptops get

The power button, Wake on LAN from warm and cold dock and S4/S5, and MAC address pass-through work on HP or HP-supported notebooks only.

Renewed, the way we do it.

Every G4 goes through the same five stations before it's listed. If it doesn't pass, it doesn't ship.

Stage 1

Intake and identification

Model, part number and serial logged. Anything that isn't a genuine HP Thunderbolt Dock 280W G4 is rejected here.

Stage 2

Full functional test

Every port loaded, all four video outputs driven, 2.5 GbE link, and charging measured on a real laptop over the combo cable.

Stage 3

Firmware and erase

Dock firmware updated where the host allows it. Settings returned to factory defaults; any stored settings cleared.

Stage 4

Clean and grade

Housing cleaned and inspected. Cosmetic grade recorded.

Stage 5

Repack with the right adapter

Matched with a 280 W power adapter and the cable set for this listing, packed in a new box.

Backed by AnyHDD's one-year warranty and 30-day returns, with free return shipping on defective items. We've supplied IT hardware to businesses since 2006.

Factory sealed.

This one is new and sealed, so it skips the bench entirely. The dock stays in its sealed box; the cables and cloth in the bundle are packed alongside it.

Sealed means sealed

New stock arrives sealed and stays that way, so there is no bench record to show.

Same coverage

It carries the same 1-year AnyHDD warranty as everything else on the site.

Questions we get asked.

Will the G4 work with my non-HP laptop?

Yes, over Thunderbolt 3 or 4, or USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode. HP tested it on select Apple, Dell and Lenovo laptops. Non-HP laptops get up to 75 W over USB-C, and the power button, Wake on LAN from warm and cold dock and MAC address pass-through work only on HP or HP-supported notebooks.

Does it work with a Mac?

HP lists macOS among the supported systems and tested a 13-inch MacBook Pro (M2). HP doesn't provide Ethernet and audio drivers for Mac.

Why does one video port stop working when I use the other?

HP states that the lower DisplayPort and the USB-C DisplayPort on the back are mutually exclusive: only one may be used at a time. Use the upper DisplayPort, HDMI or Thunderbolt 4 for the other screens.

What do I need for four 4K screens?

A laptop that sends DisplayPort 1.4 with Display Stream Compression. On DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 without DSC the fourth screen drops to FHD, and on DisplayPort 1.2 HP's summary lists up to three displays. See the selector above.

Which laptops get the 230 W?

HP platforms that take the combo cable's 4.5 mm power barrel: HP rates the 280W G4 at up to 230 W to them. Over USB-C alone the dock delivers up to 100 W, and up to 75 W to non-HP laptops. HP's QuickSpecs don't list which notebooks accept the barrel; check your laptop's HP spec sheet or HP's compatibility tool.

How fast does it ship?

Every order ships with tracking. Delivery options and timing are shown at checkout.

What warranty comes with it?

One year from the date of delivery. It may also be eligible for the original manufacturer's warranty, but AnyHDD's own 1-year coverage applies either way.One year from the date of delivery, covered by AnyHDD.

What if I need to return it?

If it fails in the first 30 days, you choose replacement or refund. There is no restocking fee, and refunds go back to your original payment method. If the item arrived defective, damaged, or isn't what you ordered, AnyHDD pays the return shipping; for any other reason the return label is yours to cover.

Is anything left on the G4 from a previous owner?

No. Renewed units go through firmware and reset before they are listed: settings returned to factory defaults, and any stored settings cleared. We've supplied IT hardware to businesses since 2006.
